Liturgical Ministries & Sacramental Preparation
Please consider which ministry suits you best.
Altar Society
Persons in this ministry care for the altar linens and purificators which are in need of laundering every week or two. Volunteers may wash and iron the linens at home during the week and return them before the weekend Masses.
Greeters
Greeters are those members of our community who welcome us all to our liturgical celebrations at the beginning of Mass each week, provide cheerful hospitality to any newcomers, and assist the ushers in whatever ways deemed necessary.
Ushers
Ushers distribute missalettes and song sheets, take up the collection, distribute bulletins, and lock up the church at the end of Mass. A training session is held each year, and efforts are made to pair persons new to this ministry with "veterans" who can assist them and answer questions. This ministry is open to both men and women.
Liturgical Environment
ALTAR BANNERS are occasionally created for various liturgical celebrations, and people of talent are needed to design, construct and display banners used to enhance the beauty of the church and promote an atmosphere of prayer and worship.
THE BULLETIN BOARD at the front entrance of the church changes according to liturgical events of the season and needs artisans willing to coordinate this ministry with other church environmental artists.
FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS and other church decor change according to liturgical seasons and celebrations. Persons in this ministry work in conjunction with a facilitator to coordinate floral and decor with other artisans as the church year requires.
Music
Each of our WEEKEND MASS MUSIC TEAMS welcomes new voices and instrumentalists to join with them in providing liturgical song. Practice usually takes place in the church one hour prior to the liturgy for our Saturday 5 p.m. and our Sunday 10:30 a.m. Masses. Practice for Sunday 8:30 a.m. Mass takes place at 8:00 a.m.
The "SACRED HEART ARRHTHYMIAS" welcome vocalists and instrumentalists to sing the Lord's praise through contemporary Christian music. This group provides music for our parish at special liturgical celebrations and represents Sacred Heart at deanery liturgies periodically throughout the year.
Readers
Readers share in the Liturgy of the Word by proclaiming the readings of the day to the community during weekend Masses. Training is provided to help persons become comfortable and proficient in using the microphone, enunciating clearly, speaking slowly and reading with expression. Lector manuals are also available to help lectors by providing background information on the different readings, offering pronunciation keys for difficult names and places, and suggesting what parts of the readings may need greater emphasis. In addition, monthly gatherings for shared Bible study are also an integral part of this ministry. Though efforts are made to schedule lectors for the Mass time of preference, it is not always possible to do so.
Eucharistic Ministers
Eucharistic Ministers are privileged to help distribute Holy Communion during Mass. Persons who serve in this ministry are usually scheduled to serve once or twice a month; efforts are made to accommodate Mass time preferences, though it is not always possible to do so.
Eucharistic ministers should be fully initiated Catholics (i.e. they have received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation) who are actively striving to live their faith in accord with the teachings of the Catholic Church. Training sessions are provided for those serving in this ministry. In addition, it is also expected that all eucharistic ministers consistently update their religious and spiritual formation through parish days of recollection, adult education classes, diocesan and regional workshops, etc.
Altar Servers
Persons who are in the fifth grade or above, and who have made their First Communion are invited to become altar servers who set up the altar and assist Father during Mass. Several training sessions are provided to help servers become comfortable in this ministry and are repeated as needed. Usually, servers are scheduled to serve once or twice a month. Efforts are made to schedule servers at their Mass time preference, though this is not always possible. If unable to serve at a Mass for which they have been scheduled, individual servers are responsible for finding their own substitutes.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word
Facilitators are needed to help organize and celebrate the Liturgy of the Word for children during our 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass. Ideally, this is a team effort of proclaiming and discussing the Sunday readings at a level more easily assimilated by children in pre-school through grade 6.
Money Counters
Money counters are needed to volunteer once a month, or as little as four times a year, to stay after the 10:30 Mass for 1 1/2 to 2 hours to count the money collected.

There is the common misconception that volunteering necessarily implies a huge commitment of time-There is the common misconception that volunteering necessarily implies a huge commitment of time--say every week for the rest of your life. Not so! We understand that you have a family, a job, other interests, and not a lot of free time.
Most of our ministries need volunteers. If you can usher, serve donuts, count money, etc. etc. etc., you are needed. Please pray about the possibility of standing up for a few moments at mass, or an hour or two a month, or whatever your schedule will allow.
Besides, Sacred Heart parishioners are some of the brightest, wittiest, nicest and most interesting people around, and volunteering will give you the opportunity to meet some of them. Please pray about this commitment.

Members of the OCIA team have the special privilege of journeying with those from other paths who now seek to join us as Catholic Christians. OCIA meets weekly throughout the year and demands a deep commitment to catechesis, companionship, prayer, sacrifice, conversion and celebration with those to whom we minister. To assist a core team primarily responsible for religious instruction, others are needed to share in an important part of the OCIA process:
