Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Lord’s Body and Blood.  As we ponder on this celebration I would like us to reflect on the following words from Holy Scripture:
“Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them to life on the last day. For my flesh is the real food; my blood is the real drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood live in me, and I live in them. The living Father sent me, and because of him I live also. In the same way whoever eats me will live because of me. This, then, is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the bread your ancestors ate, but then later died. Those who eat this bread will live forever” (John 6, 53-58).  Years ago I was speaking with a Lutheran friend of mine and he told me that he was overjoyed because little by little his church was moving to believe in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. He also told me that it was sad to see that while other churches are becoming more Eucharistic oriented and more sacramental it seems that the Catholic Church is becoming less Eucharistic and less sacramental. I think he has a point here.  When our Lord talked to his disciples about the Eucharist he spoke clearly about his real presence. As he referred himself to the bread of life Jesus never went around the bushes. As we all partake of the Bread and the Chalice which make us one, let us also keep in mind indeed, we are all one body in the Lord.  The Eucharist is a sacrificial meal that unites all of us with Christ our Head.

Always in my prayers,
Father Ismael Mora

A Word about Mass Intentions

Prayer is not always words.  For centuries Catholics have extended their prayer by such things as leaving a candle burning at church that keeps vigil when we are not physically present.  We also have Mass said for intentions – for someone living or dead, or for ourselves.  Every person attending Mass should offer it for a particular intention – asking God to hear our prayer for a special need or needs or for a person or groups of persons – living or dead.  The priest, too, offers his Mass for an intention, often an intention that someone in the parish has requested.

Having Mass offered is a fitting gift.  You may notice in the bulleting the list of persons who are being remembered in a special way during the Masses of  the week.  This is a meaningful way to remember someone who has died, or to pray for the living.  Many people offer Mass on someone’s birthday, wedding anniversary, graduation or other significant occasion as well as remembering those who have died and gone before us.   Mass also is offered for persons who are sick or in other need for special prayer.

The usual offering for a Mass is $10, but this is voluntary.  Mass has no “price” and is never “sold.”  This offering is called “stipend” and goes to the priest as a thank you for his time.  If you wish the Mass will be said on a particular day and the intention  printed in the bulletin.  Many persons prefer not to publish the intention.  It is your choice.

If you would like a Mass offered for someone, please call the parish office at 443-8429 to reserve the date of your choice.

St. Vincent de Paul Says Volunteers Needed to Help Restore Diginity

The new Shower Facilities for the Homeless are Open for Business!  On May 11th, the homeless in the immediate area around the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Facility on 3rd Stree were made aware that showers were available.  Ten people took showers, seven men and three women.  All were given clean underwear and socks.  It was rewarding to those present to hear the joyful responses to the new showers.

Eric was the first person to use shower #1-he was singing and talking to himself, & had a big smile. Ron was the first person to use shower #2. Mysty went in with dirty hands  &face and came out with a pink glow on her face and said, “Oh hot water, a piece of heaven.”. Johnathan came out &said “Feels like a million bucks”

Over the next couple of weeks we’ll continue to refine procedures for the shower before publicly announcing the time and hours of operation.  During this time we’ll open the showers Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning 9am-Noon.  Hours of operation will be expanded based upon demand and volunteers available.  At least two volunteers will be needed for each day the showers are open.  Training will be provided for volunteers.  The showers are viewed as a community asset that we should all protect and cherish.  If you volunteer, more than likely, you’ll get to work with Betty Chinn, and share the experience of helping others.

We looking for volunteers that can commit to one day a week, OR one day a month for a 3 hour shift.  If you or anyone you know would like to help by volunteering, please contact Lisa Bethune at 822-7923.

Eric Freed's weekly study group is studying the gospel of Luke on Wednesday nights from 7:30-8:30 pm at the Newman Center in Arcata. The group will meet next on June 2, 9 & 16. Several people from Sacred Heart have been attending the group that just finished studying the gospel of Matthew and recommend it highly. It is an account of the experiences of Hiroko Takanashi, who was 15 years old when the Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima at the end of World War II. Freed also translated a series of haiku poems about the Hiroshima experience written by Mrs. Takanashi and provided commentary on the literary quality of the poems.
